Oral Appliance Therapy for Snoring and Sleep Apnea
What is an Oral Appliance for Sleep Apnea?
Oral Appliances are similar to an orthodontic appliance or a mouth guard worn by athletes. However, the purpose is not to straighten your teeth or protect from impact. The Oral Appliance is worn during sleep and works by positioning the jaw so that the tongue does not fall back against the throat and block the airway. This allows for adequate breathing and alleviates snoring and sleep apnea caused by a restricted airway.

Who Should Try Oral Appliance Therapy?
Oral Appliance Therapy, or OAT for short, is recommended as a first line of therapy for the treatment of mild to moderate cases of obstructive sleep apnea. It is also successful in treating snoring issues.
Benefits of OAT
It has been shown to be very effective and has a high compliance rate, making it an excellent long-term choice. It can be used in conjunction with CPAP for severe cases, but is usually used alone with great success.
Another positive feature with OAT is its compact design making it easy to travel with.
Types of Oral Appliances for Sleep Apnea

There are numerous types of dental appliances available. As many as 100 devices have been approved by the FDA. However, any given appliance may be more effective than others for a particular individual.
Every oral appliance must be custom made, fitted and adjusted for proper effectiveness. Without widespread knowledge of what’s available, and deep understanding of the issues, it can be quite challenging to find the best device.
At Texas Sleep & TMJ Solutions, our dentists have the experience to evaluate and recommend the best appliance for your needs. We also take all the necessary steps to ensure your appliance fits and works correctly.

I highly recommend. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I have been able to do away with my CPAP machine and use the dental appliance which I love.

I highly recommend Dr. McDavid at Texas Sleep and TMJ Solutions. I struggled with severe sleep apnea for decades. Unable to tolerate the CPAP machine, I was looking for an alternative. The oral appliance custom made for me was the solution. My apnea is now under control and I’m sleeping better than I have in years.

Texas Sleep has been fantastic to work with since I found out I have mild sleep apnea. Getting a custom oral appliance (mouth guard) has really changed my life. My sleep is so much better. Can’t thank the team enough!
